Thanks for stopping by for our early preview of Critter Kitchen! We’re Amy & Maggie aka ThinkerThemer. We’re an Australian couple with two very different perspectives of what makes a great board game – Amy (Thinker) is all about the mechanics and enjoys tight, competitive games, and Maggie (Themer) is all about the storytelling and the theme of the game, and the ‘world’ that the designer is trying to create. Subscribe to our channel to hear us talk about these two elements of a game, and how well integrated we feel these are in delivering a cohesive and wonderful game experience.

  1. You always explain games so well. This one looks really interesting.

  2. Seems like Advanced FlameCraft. That's not a bad thing!

  3. Hi Amy & Maggie, the starting peech remember to me another game to me : each restaurant (tavern) need to found some ingredients with three assymetrics workers, to be able to cook recipes we re able to find in a river of cards… is that the peech of Taverns & Dragons? ๐Ÿ™‚

Comparison stop here, game is really different, but it was fun to me who ve discuss with the taverns & dragon's authors.

  4. God but I love you guys. Thank you so much, this game looks SOOOO up my alley.

  5. This is a bit too thinky for my family with a bit more competitive action to out-think the opponent. Flamecraft is more our thing with ample friendly interactions and very straightforward simple mechanics

  6. I saw this in Essen and I really want this game! <3 super cute and now when you explained mechanics more, I love it!

  7. Not a fan of the overall design / artwork. Also don't like the meeples. Looks a bit on the tacky side. But keen to see final product.

  8. Based on the way you described how you both liked the theming in this game, you should definitely check out Consumption: Food and Choices. That game was designed by a dietician and it is hands-down the most thematic game I have every played. Every single mechanic is 100% tied to the theme in such a logical way; I think Maggie will love that about it so much!

  9. I don't think we need another one of these even if it has some more to think about than Flamecraft. There are SO many of this game type. Only so much time to play it all. I'll keep my Flamecraft and admire the art of Critter from afar.

  10. Great overview as always! I am embarrassed to say that Flamecraft is still on my shelf of shame ๐Ÿ˜ฎ. This sounds like a good game and I hope they put out a solo mode!

  11. You both look so happy all the way through this review. Made me happy too, thank you ๐ŸŽ‰
Fingers crossed for a solo mode ๐Ÿคž

  12. I suspect the theme wouldn't work for most of our group, but the gameplay seems very interesting, and I was happy to hear your comments on the scaling. It almost reminds me of Dungeon Petz in certain aspects, but I suspect that's a very spurious comparison.

  13. I was disappointed with how simple flame craft was… This might be better for us

  14. This game looks mechanically more interesting but man flamecraft is so much more aesthetically pretty

  15. Not for me but a great overview.

It was also great to meet you both in Essen on the Wednesday and Thursday! Hope your first one was a great one!

  16. This looks nice ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป how did you like the SPIEL in Essen?

  17. Iโ€™ve had several chances to play this at conventions as it was going through development. You both describe the tension of the game perfectly. The game is adorable but thinky. Iโ€™m also a big fan of puns. Iโ€™m so glad thatโ€™s something this game also has in common with Flamecraft. Iโ€™m looking forward to the final product!

  18. I'm in the Flamecraft general chat group on FB, and Peter Vaughn said you were getting a copy of Critter Kitchen to review, so I've been anticipating this review ๐Ÿคฉ๐Ÿคฉ
Ya know, I wasn't going to try and snoop in your game bag if you're at the next BGBBQ game day until you mentioned that you'd take it to game days, hahaha! It looks really fun, and I think Sandara has done an amazing job with illustrating Flamecraft and Critter Kitchen, they're utterly gorgeous ๐Ÿฅฐ

  19. Hi Amy and Maggie! Woaw are you back in Australia already? I hope you had a wonderful time at Essen and in Europe ๐Ÿ™‚ Unfortunately I couldn't make it to the Joeyfam meetup since I went to a concert in Amsterdam that night of a New Zealand band called L.A.B., have you heard of them? I thought maybe I spot you on Saturday but the crowds said no ๐Ÿ˜‚ Take care and hope the jetlag will be over soon! Cis

  20. This game looks right up my alley! When I looked at the Essen Spiel preview list, this was one of the top games that I wanted to demo.

  21. Thank you for this. The deluxe edition for Flamecraft was sooooo beautiful. I am excited to see what their plans are for this.

  22. Cardboard Alchemy (Peter Vaughn) always does an amazing job with game productions, so very excited to see how good this will end up looking.

  23. Grim Forest does the same with reveal location cards to gain resources

  24. Thanks for the sneak peek! I like the simultaneous secret action selection, which I have been enjoying a lot recently with Game of Thrones 2nd Ed and Libertalia: Winds of Galecrest. The secret public goals seem like another fun layer of tension too.

  25. This is why I love your channel. Just an amazing overview of the game, how to play, details into the theme and how the mechanics tie in. Top shelf review! I'm excited for Alex and this game to hit kickstarter. I'll definitely be backing. Couldn't get a sense of how it plays while I saw it at Gen Con but this just sold me. Thanks!

  26. Absolutely. Adorable. Great preview excited to grab a copy!~

  27. Thanks for your thoughts on the game, ladies. I am looking forward to giving this one a try at some point!

  28. ugh your excitement for CK just makes me so happy! literally could be any game you two enjoy and i automatically am hooked in hahah! thanks for the fun preview friends!!๐Ÿฅณ

  29. Amy had another cameo in a dice tower Essen diary vlog. You two need to do a proper video with them. ๐Ÿ˜Š
