  1. I love the thrill of randomness in games – adds a whole new level of excitement in gaming experience haha!

  2. Randomness is definitely important in board games for all the reasons you illustrated. Another factor that influences how enjoyable (or rather, how insufferable) randomness can be is the duration of time for which you will suffer a particular bit of luck. My tolerance for "bad luck" is much higher for short games or for games with many discrete rounds – for which the luck of one round doesn't necessarily spill over, at least not dramatically – into the next round. Think of classic playing card games, especially trick-taking games. They tend to have a heavy helping of luck of involved and take place over many brief, semi-independent rounds/hands.

  4. The simplest dice game that mitigates bad rolls elegantly is Don't LLAMA Dice. On your turn, you can simply choose not to roll and end your round with some negative points, rather than risk busting. There are scenarios where you want to risk it all and where you want to play it safe by stopping. Everyone I introduced it to loved it.

  5. I like randomness – it makes for epic moments and adds variability! A game that is purely random isn't fun to me (like Bingo), but where there is some luck involved that can affect your strategy that makes it more memorable, fun, and cause you to take calculated risks.

  6. I like games with high randomness. It evens the playing field a bit especially for first time players, where someone who's played a particular strategy game dozens of times before may get a huge advantage otherwise. Randomness also adds a great element of unpredictability, and can truly create some amazing highs and lows (I'm thinking Nemesis and Robinson Crusoe). Granted, I come from a RPG background, so crazy dice rolls and frequent near death experiences are an old friend. I do think players need to be aware of what they're getting into because sometimes you don't want high chaos, so I try to poll my players prior to see how we're feeling before a game night.

  7. I love randomness in games. I love the tension it may create, the fact of uncertainty when it comes to succeed in having a good roll or picking up the right card at the right moment.

  8. Every board gamer actually likes luck to some degree. 99,9% of modern games are non-deterministic and ALL the most popular games have luck involved. Actually most gamers dislike games that are deterministic, aka zero-luck. Examples are Chess, Hive, and most abstract strategy games where the result of one action always is gonna have the same outcome. I rarely see Hive in the top list of any boardgamer and i have never seen chess in any board gamer list period (is certainly in mine). Interesting topic.

  9. I really love Unearthed. It also lets you reroll the dice that have already been played on another turn instead of rolling new dice, which allows you to mitigate bad previous rolls.
